HCSL promotes the development of meaningful life skills in an inclusive community setting.
Our Programs
In addition to offering supported, independent living opportunities, HCSL also offers a free series of Day Programs focusing on visual arts, e.g. painting, drawing, clay and printmaking, as well as music, movement/dance and cooking. These Day Programs take inspiration from the vegetable gardens, orchard and natural environment of HCSL’s property in Jacona, NM. The programs are open to adults with intellectual disabilities and their family members, caregivers and friends who live in the surrounding northern New Mexico communities.
A long-term goal is to also offer life skills and job training opportunities utilizing HCSL’s gardens, orchard and the property’s natural environment. If you are interested in receiving more information about HCSL’s programs, please contact us.
GARDENING
The fruit trees and extensive vegetable and native flower gardens of HCSL’s property in Jacona are used by the property’s residents and Day Program participants to learn about planting, maintaining and harvesting vegetables, fruit and perennial flowers. In 2025, HCSL began selling selling its vegetables, starter plants, dried and fresh herbs, flower bouquets and more at the Pojoaque Farmers’ Market two Wednesdays per month from June through August. Proceeds from the farm stand helped support HCSL’s Day Programs and the upkeep of its property in Jacona.
COOKING
The fruit and vegetables from HCSL’s gardens provide the ingredients for cooking Day Programs that the organization offers free of charge to individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers and family members who live in northern New Mexico.
ART
HCSL recognizes the importance of creating an environment where individuals with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to describe their experiences and express their feelings through music, movement/dance and the visual arts, e.g. painting, drawing, clay and printmaking. HCSL’s art Day Programs bring guest artists from the surrounding communities to lead workshops and classes at its property in Jacona that are free and open to individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers and family members.
